Understanding the Median

The median is a measure of central tendency that represents the middle value of a dataset. It is less sensitive to outliers than the mean.

Finding the Median

  1. Sort the data in ascending order.
  2. If there is an odd number of values, the median is the middle value.
  3. If there is an even number of values, the median is the average of the two middle values.

Example

For the dataset [3, 1, 4, 1, 5, 9, 2, 6], the sorted data is [1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9]. Since there are 8 values (even), the median is (3 + 4) / 2 = 3.5.

About

The Median Calculator finds the median of a set of numbers. The median is the middle value when the numbers are arranged in ascending order. If there is an even number of values, the median is the average of the two middle values.
